Autumn Term Updates

December '23

What a busy month it has been in the Fantastic Foxes!

As well as preparing for Christmas with Christmas Jumper Days, making Christmas cards and enjoying some Christmassy activities, we have also been hard at work on our projects!

In Science we have been exploring electricity including switches, insulators and conductors. We have loved creating circuits and using all the electrical components.

We have created some fantastic persuasive writing in English about Christmas food. I hope all your Christmas lunches are as wonderful and tasty as the children have described!

With Mrs Hogg in PE, the children have choreographed some great Rock n Roll dances. They have worked together really well and been extremely enthusiastic. We are very proud of all the Foxes.

This week was Parents Evenings and it was wonderful to be able to share all the great work the Foxes have been up to. Well done Foxes and thank you for all the home support as always.

Meanwhile in the classroom, we have been working hard as usual!

  • In English, we have been focusing on persuasive language. This has involved watching adverts, looing at pictures of food and even tasting some sweet treats! We used all this to write down lots of persuasive language ideas that we will be able to use in our writing over the next few weeks.
  • Science gave us the opportunity to explore different appliances, deciding if they were electrical appliances and then sorting them based on whether they are powered by mains or battery. Some of us decided we would be looking for them at home too to practise!
  • In Geography, we looked at the lives of the tribes that live in the Amazon Rainforest and compared them to our own lives. We really thought about the importance of the rainforest to the tribes and how they get everything they need from the forest.
  • We started our new Computing project this week too, by starting to look at branching databases. We played Guess Who to help us!

All this and lots more!

Thank you to everyone for their kind donations for Children in Need. The children really enjoyed coming to school in their non-uniform and we even designed our very own Children in Need t-shirts!

A great first week back saw the Foxes taking part in St Andrew's Sustainability Week! They thought carefully about global warming, ways to reduce their carbon footprint and also explore renewable energy sources. It was great to see them thinking about the small changes they can make to help make sure God's world is still a place for future generations to thrive.

As well as this, the Foxes...

  • Used their sticky knowledge in Science to complete tasks linked to the human skeleton and muscles
  • Explored the 'Big Frieze' in RE
  • Looked at gender stereotypes in PSHE
  • Started looking at mechanisms in our new D&T project

A very busy first week back that also included a visit from Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough!

What an amazing first half term we have had in Year 3 and 4 and what an incredible start the children have made to the year! We have enjoyed writing our own character descriptions in English with a focus on Fantastic Mr Fox. The children thought carefully about using expanded noun phrases and ensured that they used some fantastic word choices to really describe Mr Fox in their independent work. In the wider curriculum, we have worked hard on our Geography work all about rainforests. We have used atlases to explore the countries of South America, written post cards whilst pretending we were in a rainforest ourselves and enjoyed creating actions to help us remember the different layers of the rainforests. ‘Beautiful Botanicals’ has been our art focus for this half term and it is safe to say we have loved it! We started off by sketching fruits, vegetables and plants in our sketchbooks by viewing them from different angles. We then worked up to exploring with printing using different colours, leaves and experimenting with positioning the leaves at different angles. Finally, we used our previous skills and knowledge to create our very own prints. We thought carefully about what worked well during our explore time and took these elements forward with us to create our very own final print. In computing, we have enjoyed exploring spreadsheets, learning about the People of God in RE and have focused on exploring our goals and achievements in our PSHE lessons. The children have also enjoyed many exciting experiences this half term including our Y3 Hinduism day where the children learned more about Diwali, the Hindu gods and the story of Rama and Sita. They even got to enjoy some fantastic dancing and created some superb Rangoli patterns. The children also enjoyed using their senses to explore colours as part of our poetry work. We loved tasting a range of different fruits, smelling a range of different smells and feeling a range of different materials to really immerse ourselves in language and collect vocabulary for our own poetry work. Overall, a great start to our year in LKS2, you should all be incredibly proud of the fantastic start you have made!
